Crosman never made a .22 cal BB rifle. They made several .22 Cal Pellet rifles over the years. Several are still in production.

I believe you are asking about a Crosman model 38T target. they were made from 1964 to 85. Crosman offers a free service to locate shops that repair older air guns. See the link below. Further research indicates it was made in the 7 month (July) of 1981. The first 3 or 4 numbers of the serial number indicate the month and year. 781xxxxxxx

Crosman air gun company owns both the Benjamin and Sheridan line of airguns. 1. Go to the Crosman home page 2. Click on Crosman University in the lower left. 3. Open up "Benjamin Product dates." 4. Scroll down to the "Sheridan Serial numbers" and locate your serial number and the Year it was manufactured.
Unfortunately Crosman doesn't have a listing by Serial numbers. But the pistol was made in two variations. The first variant was between 1964-1976. The first variant has metal sights and a metal cylinder. During this time they made a second variant that had a plastic rear sight and plastic cylinder for the pellets it was made between 1973 to 1976.

Originally Sheridan, Benjamin and Crosman were 3 separate companies. Benjamin bought-out Sheridan. A few years later Crosman bought-out Benjamin. Today Crosman owns all 3 companies. In 1975 Crosman started serial numbering Benjamin / Sheridan air rifles. Before that (1975) it is not easy to identify the year the Benjamin or Sheridan's were made.
