It depends on the model. The numbers are always on the receiver, never the barrel. Pumps and autos are on the bottom of the receiver, forward of the carrier. Over/Under serial numbers are under the action release lever on top of the tang. Move the lever to open and you will see the serial number.
Serial number is stamped on the lower tang of the receiver. It is covered by the lever. Move the lever to see it.
On the lower tang behind the lever.
Usually on the bottom tang, underneath the lever. Some later 39a's have it on the top tang, behind the hammer.

IF IT HAS A SERIAL NUMBER YOU SHOULD FIND IT ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RECEIVER, UNDER THE FINGER LEVER, AROUND THE TANG AREA. COULD BE IN ONE OF A FEW DIFFERENT AREAS, BUT ALWAYS ON THE RECEIVER. OLDER MODELS MAY NOT HAVE IT. IF IT HAS A SERIAL NUMBER YOU SHOULD FIND IT ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RECEIVER, UNDER THE FINGER LEVER, AROUND THE TANG AREA.
