What does grains mean in ammunition?

A 'grain' is defined as 1/7000 of one pound. A 140 grain bullet weighs 1/50 pound or about 1/3 ounce.

A grain is also about 1/15 of a gram.

Grain weights are used most often for bullets and powder weighing under one ounce.
