WORLD record holder Ian Thorpe was disqualified from the 400m freestyle event at the Olympic swimming trials at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre today.

Thorpe overbalanced on the blocks and fell into the water before the official start of his heat on the opening day of the eighth selection trials. After returning to the blocks with the rest of the competitors, he was told by an official that he was disqualified.

Thorpe's manager Dave Flask as said the Olympic, World and Commonwealth champion heard a noise before he fell into the water and stated that Thorpe had lodged a protest. After officials viewed footage of the incident, Thorpe lost both appeals and is not scheduled to race in the event, losing a place to relatively unknown swimmer Craig Stevens.

Thorpe is ready to move on and has qualified for the 200 metre event, ensuring a place on the Olympic Team.
