It is because of Archimede's Principle. The buoyancy of the object takes off some of your weight, so it is less stressful underwater. Like if you put an object in a glass filled to the brim with water, some water would spill. But if you could gather all that water together, and weigh it, that would be the buoyancy of the the object.
