Who introduced surfing?

Surfing is a art that was practiced in Hawaii and Polynesia long before there were any written records. Many of their myths have stories about surfing, but it impossible to know how much of it is true and how much is storyteller's invention. Therefore it is not known exactly when where or by whom it was first invented.
