Drag. It reduced the fall rate to a survivable speed.
The apex would be the center of the round parachute.

The main parts of a parachute are the canopy (the fabric that catches the air to slow descent), the lines (cords that connect the canopy to the harness), the harness (the straps that attach the parachute to the user), and the deployment mechanism (the system that releases the parachute to open).
It is called a drogue chute and it stabilizes the jumper and pulls the main parachute out of the container or pack.
The main forces acting on a parachute during descent are gravity, air resistance, and the weight of the parachute itself. Gravity pulls the parachute and its load downwards, while air resistance provides an upward force that slows the descent. The weight of the parachute adds to the overall force acting on the system.
Indeed why? There are videos of examples where a parachutist has deliberately set fire to their parachute in flight, however this is part of a stunt. For 99.9999999% of skydivers, they do not set fire to their parachute as it is needed to save their life. For your information, all skydivers wear a reserve parachute for use in the case of a malfunction of the main parachute.
One improvement made to prevent parachutes from oscillating is the addition of a stabilizing drogue parachute. This smaller parachute deployed before the main chute prevents excessive swinging by creating drag and stabilizing the descent. Additionally, utilizing a "reefing" mechanism on the main parachute can also help gradually slow its deployment, reducing the chances of oscillation.
A nose cone helps to prevent air resistance also it can hold a parachute.
Your mom is the purpose.
There are several different types of malfunctions possible on a parachute while it is deploying. Everybody jumps with a spare parachute, known as a reserve. The parachutist identifies the type of malfunction and either cuts away the main parachute and deploys the reserve or if a cutaway isn't necessary just deploys the reserve straight away. Please note that cut away doesn't mean you have to cut all the lines with a knife, there is a pad that you grab and pull down which releases the main parachute.
