So many people want to start jumping the wake right away. One of the most important things you can focus on that is often overlooked is proper edging technique. In my years of instructing people how to wakeboard properly, a common problem is not having the proper edging to allow you to get the air you want and further facilitate the bigger tricks like flips and spins.

Focus on learning how to approach both sides of the wake, not just your heelside edge, practice at both heelside and toeside edging. Proper edge technique consists of getting a "progressive edge" to the wake, meaning, your edge gets progressively harder as you get closer to the wake. A common error made by many riders is to edge really hard at first, flatten the board out and try to jump at the wake. Correct edge technique is done by edging far outside the wake, flattening the board out, and slowly, progressively edging harder and harder back towards the wake. Your hardest edge should be as you rise up the wake, stay on edge all the way through the wake and use the tension you've created in the line to help propel you upwards.

If you can get your edging (heelside and toeside) down correctly, you'll be able to progress so much more quickly.

First - wear a helmet and wrist guards- you will take falls that your ancestors will feel. Don't chance a head injury. Second - Take a professional lesson - in that lesson you will learn the intricacies of edge control which if you don't have you will develop soon enough but after A LOT of pain/broken bones, etc. and DON'T try a back flip unless you are a pro.
Tips to give people about learning to snowboard are,

* Take a lesson with a Certified Pro. * Snowboarding is like skiing except you are standing sideways.

* Keep your weight centered on both feet. * Don't twist your body. * Keep your down hill edge up so you don't slam. * Take it slow. * Wear a helmet and wrist guards. * Beginner or learning areas at most resorts are free. * Learn the Responsibility Code every skier/snowboarder must know. * Have fun and don't get frustrated, snowboarding is difficult at first.

Wakeboarding is a total body activity. However, the most important aspect of wakeboarding is a strong core. A strong core greatly increases your balance helps you to maneuver much easier when you wakeboard. Good core exercises are the key here.

A great exercise is doing squats on those half balance balls while you are holding a weight with both your arms extended out.

Also never forget to stretch a good 15 minutes before and after each wakeboard session.
