A Shepards Crook is a lifesaving device lifeguards use to assist people. If a person is too far away to reach with a guard tube, the lifeguard can reach them with the crook (its generally long enough to reach about halfway through the pool). Guards are supposed to try this before getting in the water to physically pull someone out.
