Proper training and proper equipment.

Proper training usually means certification by a recreational Scuba diver training agency, like PADI, NAUI, BSAC or SDI.

Proper equipment usually means (at a minimum):

  • a mask, to enable you to see
  • fins, to enable you to swim
  • wetsuit or drysuit, to stay warm
  • tank and regulator, to breathe (with pressure gauge to enable you to monitor gas supply)
  • weight belt and BCD, to enable you to control your bouyancy
  • depth gauge and timer (or a dive computer), to enable you to monitor your decompression profile
