Most "recreational" dive training agencies in the world limit dives to 40 meters (about 120 feet). The Cayman Islands Watersports Association limits all dives in the Cayman Islands to 100 feet.

"Technical" and commercial divers are trained and equipped to dive to deeper depths. Most technical diving takes place above 100 meters, though there is no fixed maximum depth rule in place, as there is in recreational diving.

Since most of the world's sea life lives at relatively shallow depths, the vast majority of the recreational scuba dives made in the world go no deeper than about 20 meters.
