He swam south east from Hyannis until he reached the gulf stream, this took him about 2 weeks in quite cold water. When he hit the GS the temp picked up and so did the current, taking him East towards Europe. Gulf stream current in that part of Atlantic varies from 1.5 to 3knots. He diverted to the Azores halfway across due to tiredness and mental issues. He rested on the the Azores and then headed off again, but this time without the benefit of the GS. He battled storms and big waves until he reached the french coast some 72 days later
