Extremely various costs depending on type of board and weather new or used. If you are a beginner try to get a good used cheapish board, till you are a bit better. A beginner board should be picked up for appx. US$200 to US$400.

Foam = $100 plus tax at costco. Fiberglass shortboards you can get anywhere from $250 on up to around $800 ($1200 for carbon fiber). You can get a decent used board for between $250 to $350 on Craigslist (depending on where your located) or at surf shop. Of course you can always find one cheaper than that but the price will be reflected in the quality of the board. I've seen some new shortboards priced at around $300 from lesser known shapers and smaller shops. A long board is gonna run you at least $400 used and will top off around $1200.

The price of the board is usually reflective of the person/ company and person who shaped the board. Pop-outs (generic boards made by large manufacturers in places like china) are cheaper, but can be good for a longboard in shortboaders quiver, and can take a beating. The more well known a shaper is the more expensive the board becomes, but there are many small time shapers who make a quality product.

If your a beginner who is unsure about the sport I would get a foam board from costco that is at least 8 ft, figure out if you like it and if you actually have the time to learn. If you think your gonna be committed and getting a lot of days in the water then I would buy a longboard or a funboard. Long boards start around 9ft whereas funboards are in the 7 to 9ft range.

If you are a boards sports person (skate, snowboard, kiteboard, wakeboard, windsurf) you may progress quicker and may want to invest in a hybrid or even a short board. Keep in mind that it is much easier to learn on a longboard and they are good in almost all conditions, making them a great first board. Choosing though is up to the each persons individual preference. Often renting a board is a great idea before buying.

It all depends on what kind of surf board that you are looking for. If you are looking for a good regular surfboard yourprobably going to spend around 300 but if your lookng for a mini surf board or cutting surfboard your looking somewhere around 20.
