Sometimes. There is always a risk when you go in the water and going underwater is a greater risk. That is why proper training and being careful about how and where you dive are important. Scuba diving is no more dangerous than skiing in my opinion.

In the U.S., about 50 per two-year period, so 25 a year. However, many of these are not drownings, but other problems, like heart attacks, that happen to occur while diving. It is relatively difficult to drown with an air supply stuck in your mouth, so drowning while diving is extremely unusual.
