One lap is usually seen as there-and-back, so a lap is twice the length of the pool.

So a lap in a 50 m pool is 100 m. One mile is 1608 meters. 1/2 mile is 804 meters. 804 / 100 = 8

So 8 laps and a turn is 0.5 miles.

288 laps x 50 metres = 14400 metres.

14400 / 1000 = 14.4 km's.

14.4 / 1.6 = 9 miles.

It's not exact but pretty close, 9 miles give or take a hundred yards.
