Freestyle event distances in the Olympics are: 50 meters 100 meters 200 meters 400 meters 800 meters (women only) 1,500 meters (men only)
I don't know if you are asking were or are.... but some swimming events now would be: FREESTYLE: 50 free 100 free 200 free 500 free 1000 free 1650 (mile) free BUTTERFLY: 100 fly 200 fly BREASTSTROKE: 100 breast 200 breast BACKSTROKE: 100 back 200 back NOTE: all of these events are for short course season. (25 yard pool length) and all of these events are for 13 and over (as of age.)
Well, it really depends. Most people start competing in Free Style, but if you're pretty good, your coach will decide. To get to free style, it usually takes a couple of years, or a few months if you're really good. (the levels are pre-alpha, alpha, beta, gama, delta, then comes Free Style; free style goes all the way up to Free Style 10.)
it really depends on which competition you are participating in. If that's a big one, you probbaly need to. If it is just for fun, it is totally free.

it depends on what stroke you are swimming. if you are swimming breaststroke then you do bend your knee in freestyle and backstroke you don't bend your knee. in butterfly you only snap your whole leg your knee doesn't bend all the way. if you don't kick the right way in breaststroke then you can hurt your self becareful and ask a coach. good luck
