In a rowing race, the course can be anywhere from 1000 or so meters to around 5000. (Less than a mile to around 3 miles).
The most common course lengths are 1500m, 2000m, and 5000m.
The distance you race can depend on what age category you fall into and what sort of race your rowing.
Usually in standard regattas, J16 (anyone under 16) row the 1500m while anyone over 16 will race the full 2km. In heads of the river, they range from 3.5km to 5km, depending on the course available. Sprints vary from 300 to 600 metres and are not shortened to accomadate age groups.
