Touchdown The only necessities are air and gravity. The parachute works with them to decelerate your falling speed from around 120mph, or so, to about one foot per second on landing.

The principle behind skydiving is the law of gravity - if you have nothing supporting you, you will fall to the ground at a constantly increasing speed. However, as speed increases, air resistance increases even more. After a few seconds, air resistance will completely support at skydiver's weight and they will stop accelerating. That doesn't mean they have stopped falling; the skydiver will be travelling downwards at a speed of about 120mph.
Skydivers freefall until they need to open their parachutes - between 2000 and 6000 feet above the ground. Higher altitudes are safer as they give the parachutist more time to correct potential problems or carry out emergency procedures.
The best way is to take a skydiving course at your local dropzone. There are several options, but if you are looking just to do a single jump, then a tandem skydiving course is definitely recommended. This is where you are strapped to an experienced instructor and they operate the parachute.
Typically, you will jump from anywhere up to 15000ft and enjoy speeds of up to 120mph. This takes around 50 seconds of freefall before the parachute is opened. A further 3 to 4 minutes of canopy time under the parachute takes you back to the ground.
You can also get your skydive filmed and photos taken by an experienced cameraman.
There are some restrictions to the sport such as age and weight. Many centres will not take anyone over 100kg's and will require a medical form signing once you are over the age of 40.
So the answer is, do an internet search and find your local centre.
Once you have become qualified as a skydiver, there are a series of check which take place before you exit the aircraft:
You board a plane with an instructor and fly to however many thousand feet above a designated "Dropzone". You then step out of the plane and freefall for several seconds before pulling the parachute and floating gently back to earth and landing on the Dropzone.
You will need a aircraft of some sort (airplane, hot air balloon, helicopter, blimp, etc), and a parachute if you intend to skydive more than once.
