It depends on the materials to which you are referring. I have heard that certain stains, including grease stains, can be removed from carpet with WD-40, of all things. If you are referring to clearing grease and gunpowder residue out of a firearm, try Gunscrubber. It will blast everything off the firearm. Just remember to lubricate afterwards.

Oh yeah, and Dawn dish detergent works as well for fabrics.
