Statistically speaking, male swimmers at their prime are considerably faster than their female counterparts at their prime. Men are faster because, genetically, men develop more muscle than women do. This doesn't mean men are always faster than women. I knew quite a few female swimmers in high school who would leave me behind in their wake.
