I believe the first was Roger Bresnahan, in 1907 or so. As a catcher, he had previously developed shin guards, and after a beaning, he similarly developed the batting helmet. Only in 1941, though, did it catch on at all, and then only into the '50s did it become somewhat common. Use was mandated only in the early-70s, with the earflap becoming mandatory for new players in 1983.

Jackie Robinson became the first black player to break the color barrier in the Major Leagues. Robinson first appeared in a Major League Baseball game in 1947. With Robinson's introduction and immediate success, black players began to find widespread acceptance in the American national pastime. Along with fellow pioneers, including greats Don Newcombe and Roy Campanella, Robinson led the Dodgers on one of the most successful runs in baseball history, winning 6 pennants in 10 years. The Dodgers' willingness to oppose social norms of segregation is often cited as one of the primary reasons for their success in the '40s and '50s.
Charles Follis was believed to be the first black player in the NFL from 1902 to 1906. Between 1920 and 1926, there were only nine black people that played in the NFL, making Fritz Pollard and Bobby Marshall the first black players in the NFL in 1920.
When the inaugural Hall of Fame ballots were counted in 1936, five players had received at least 75% of the votes cast - the standard set for election by the Baseball Writers' Association of America that still exists today. Those players were the first five men elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The five players were, in order of votes: Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson.
NFL players were first required to wear helmets in 1943. At the time, they were made of leather. They then went to being made of plastic and now are made of polycarbonate.
Obviously, they wear helmets to protect their heads from injury. Batting helmets are used to protect the batter from being injured by a pitched ball and although its rather rare from a foul ball off his own bat. Batting helmets are required in most leagues While playing in the field or running bases, some players wear helmets or inserts in their caps, to protect their heads from injury. There is surely the possibility of being hit by a throw ball, or being kicked in the head or hitting ones head on the ground or against an opposing player's body when sliding into base.
