African-Canadian sons of former U.S. slaves are credited with some innovations such as the slap shot and athletic goal tending, but they did not invent the sport. Two of the best books on this subject were written by brothers George and Darril Fosty. 'Splendid is the Sun: The 5,000 Year History of Hockey' is the authoritative work on the origins of the game. By the same authors, "Black Ice: The Lost History of the Colored Hockey Lague of the Maritimes, 1895-1925" is by far the best and most fascinating account of the early contributions of black men to the modern professional game.
