When the Europeans first heard of it, the Chinese pronounced it so it sounded like "Peking", and that became the name for the city in all major European languages.

But the Chinese pronunciation changed, just like all languages tend to change with time.

To adapt to that, the PinYin system of Chinese romanization came into use in 1958 when it was formally adopted by China.

Since then, the name of the city has been written and pronounced "Beijing".

The small dog that was named for the city is still known as Pekinese, though.
