Tian An Men (The Gates of Peace of Heavens) is the place where Mao proclaimed the People's Republic of China in 1949.

Till 1911, Tian An Men was the palace of the Emperor since its 1415 Mings' building.

The place in front of the palace is called Tian An Men Square - from the name of the palace. (designed and built in 1651, since enlarged in the 1950s)

Mao proclaimed 'from inside the walls of Tian An Men' not from the square (square become famous in the world in 1989).

Between 1912 and 1949 there was a 'Republic of China' - nationalist, secularist and not-communist.

Until 1912, the Emperor was the intermediate between The God and the Chinese - and was supposed to pray daily and intercede for them - so you understand the name of the place.
