Mr. Derby is an overseer at the Amari's plantation in the novel "Copper Sun" by Sharon Draper. He is known for being corrupt and cruel, mistreating the slaves and exploiting his power for his own gain. He is a symbol of the deep-rooted racism and brutality that existed during that time period.
Amari - A fifteen-year-old girl who is kidnapped from her tribe in Africa to be shipped to the states as a slave. She is the main character as the story follows her through her life of becoming a slave.Afi - Afi is a woman whom Amari encounters while in Cape Coast Castle (A place in Africa where captives are held before they are shipped to America). Afi helps Amari survive by making sure she had food to eat, teaching her to exercise in order to stay strong, and helping her emotionally by giving her confidence that she can endure.Bill - A sailor who brings Amari safely to his cabin on the ship while all of the other sailors abuse and rape the other women. Instead of following the lead of the other sailors, he teaches Amari English words.Polly - A fifteen-year-old, white, indentured, girl. Her indenture was bought by Mr. Derby (See description below). She was made to work alongside Amari and the rest of the slaves on the plantation. Amari and she eventually become friends as their relationship grows throughout the plot. Polly is a very important character, I suggest focusing on the relationship between her and Amari as you read.Mr. Derby - A power-hungry farm owner. He has no shame in the cruel way he treats his slaves. He is married to, and having a child with, his wife, Isabelle Derby. His first wife passed away while giving birth to their son. Mr. Derby proves throughout the novel that he is capable of love (Proven by his love for Mrs. Derby).Clay Derby - Clay is the son of Mr. Derby who receives Amari as a birthday present from his father. Clay is a bitter, unhappy, young man who is looking for companionship because he does not receive much attention in the home. Like his father, he abuses his power over the slaves. He is a very selfish and inconsiderate character.Mrs. Derby - Mrs. Derby is married to Mr. Derby, she's about 18 years old and carrying Mr. Derby's child. She has almost no control over her life, as she must submit to her husband. She was married off to Mr. Derby by her father despite the fact that she was in love with her own slave. Mrs. Derby treats the slaves with respect and dignity, much to her husbands' disapproval.Teenie - Teeny is a slave who works in the kitchen at the Derby's farm. She was born a slave and is very wise. Her main line in this book is that "Nothing is lost as long as you remember." Or something like that.Tidbit - Or Timothy, is the young four-year-old son of Teenie. Those are the most important characters that I can think of off the top of my head.
