I was at a Chargers game at Balboa Bowl in the early 60's and can remember the "new Dodge Charger" being introduced to the public at half time.
My impression was that it had been named after the football team.
The football team was named after credit cards used by team founder Barron Hilton (owner of the hotel chain).
The Chargers original majority owner, Barron Hilton was the originator of the first credit card. The Chargers were named by him.
They were named after a kind of Horse. A Charger. but instead of horses on their helmets they use lightning bolts.
The Los Angeles Chargers.
the general lee
There is no record of a player named Sampson F Burton in the San Diego Chargers all time roster. (see link below)
In 1977 the base Charger and Charger Sport were dropped as this body style became part of the newly named B-body Monaco line, and only the Charger SE and Charger Daytona were offered. Sales dropped to 36,204. In 1978 only about 2,800 Chargers were produced (likely to use up leftover stock of 1977 trim parts), after which it was replaced by the similar 1978 Dodge Magnum. that is the time where they stopped making original charger.
Chrysler corporation invented it and had a experimental car named the charger in 1964 that had a turbine engine in it.
1970; they entered the AFL in 1960
A 1969 dodge charger but they call it the "general lee" Did you know:There were a total of 309 "General Lee" cars created and mostly destroyed during the "The Dukes of Hazzard" series.
...Well, there was. "Seau's" named after Junior Seau- the very famous, very loved former Linebacker who played for the Chargers from 1990 to 2000- would be the unofficial Charger "bar". But after Junior tragically took his own life in May of 2012, the family decided to close the doors. The other "bar" that might be considered a "Charger bar" would be McGregors- a decent establishment just 2 blocks from Qualcomm Stadium.
Pro-Football-Reference.com's player encyclopedia has no entry for anyone named "Al Bowman" playing for the San Diego Chargers or any other team. There are no entries for anyone with similar last names (e.g., Bauman, Baumann, Ballman, Behman, Berman, Bohlmann, Bouman, Bulman, Bullman) having played for the Chargers.
The team's original owner, Baron Hilton, named the Los Angeles Chargers after the Carte Blanche charge card he developed. The most common theory appears to be that the Chargers were named after the newly introduced Carte Blanche credit card. The first team owner, Barron Hilton, was then the first president of the Carte Blanche credit card company formed in 1959 by his Father Conrad Hilton. Credit cards were still a new thing back then and people who used them were called "Chargers". The credit card company was losing money and he wanted to promote the use of his cards hence the name "Los Angeles Chargers" was born. When the team move to San Diego they kept the Charger name.
