There are USA Taekwondo Olympic Team trials where the prospective competitors compete and the winners are selected to the team.
It will be in 2012.
Where possible, compete in Taekwondo competitions and championships, as these will eventually lead to higher levels of expertise and will lead to oppurtunities. Talk to your coach or supervisor about competitions you can partake in and about trials for National or Olympic teams. All the best !!

The USA Taekwondo (USAT) is the National Governing Body (NGB) for the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) in the sport of Taekwondo. The USAT is also the member National Association for the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) which is the International Governing Body for Taekwondo as recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) The USAT holds Team Trials at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, which qualifies athletes to move on to the next level of the selection process. the World Taekwondo Federation's World Olympic Qualification Tournament. The selection process in 2008 was the same as it is each year. Every country has a National Taekwondo organization, often referred to as the NGB (National Governing Body), or GNB (Governing National Body) which is recognized by the National Olympic Committee in each country. Athletes participate in State and National Olympic Championships, and then compete in the National Team Trials. After that, they compete in the National Olympic qualifiers to earn a spot on the team. These events are scheduled at various times in each country, and the dates are posted in advance on the website for the World Taekwondo Federation's member National Associations in each country.
Karate is not an Olympic sport. However, Tai Kwon Do is an Olympic sport and there have been a number of gold medals for the United States in this sport.
