I dont know about 1950, but 6 of us British soldiers stationed in Gibraltar went home on leave in 1952 aboard the Otranto which was on her way from Australia to England. It was a three day trip to Southhampton. We managed to meet 6 Australian nurses on board who had hitchhiked from northern France and just made the sailing. When we got to Southampton they only had enough money for one to return to London and wire the money for the rest to get home. By timing it right we managed to find that the various bars on board stayed open at various times and we could imbibe almost all day.A good time was had by all.
