The typical bar table in the US uses a 4 foot fluorescent light with 2 40 watt lamps. The 9 foot tables most often have 3 incandescent lamps, each from 60 to 100 watts, inline above the table, although 8 foot fluorescent lamps are also used, with 2 to 4 40 watt lamps. For professional televised events, floodlights are typically used.

The size of light depends on the total amount of light you have in a room. There are specialty lamps made for pool tables. For 7 and 8 foot tables you generally want a lamp that is 42"-60" in length with three shades, and for 9 foot tables you want about 70"-82" with 4 shades. There are also tiffany style "box" lamps that hold Flourescent tubes, multiple sockets, and led lighting.

For a 3.5*7 table, the lamp should be 35-55 inches long. For a 4*8 table, the lamp should be 40-60 inches long. For a 4.5*9 table, the lamp should be 50-70 inches long.
