The first method learned, which although not accurate, works well for single rail bank shots for new players is the "split the difference". Look at cue ball location and the target location. pick an imaginary point on the rail halfway between the two and that is the target point to hit. However, if the target point and cue ball are not the same distance from the rail, the one closest must be "moved", in your mind to an imaginary point, so it is the same distance from the rail - it is this imaginary point that must then be used to determine half the distance.
