Any stroke to the cue ball at other than dead center produces some "spin". Contact left or right of center is call "english" and can have a lot of spin. Contact below center is a "draw shot" and can also have a lot of spin. Contact above center is a "follow shot" and generally does not generate as much spin as can be done on the draw shot. An off-center shot from above, typically holding the at 45 to 90 degrees from the table, can induce more spin than the other type of shots just described, and is called a "masse" (pronounced maa - say).
