A board game piece represents a person who is playing the game (in a game such as Monopoly). Chess pieces are a bit different, they represent soldiers or leaders in a war being played out on the board. In Risk, pieces represent military units, such as battalions. Different games have different designs.
It varies on the board size. In an 8x8 board there are 24 pieces in total. In a 12x12 board, there are 60 pieces in total.

The way to outflank the opponent's pieces is to have his color piece on each end of a row of his opponent's pieces. That allows him to turn his opponent's pieces into his own pieces.

The components of Chess are the game board and the pieces. There are 6 different kinds of pieces: the king, the queen, the knights, the bishops, the rooks(castles), and the pawns.
Backgammon is a two-player board game played on a unique backgammon board. The players roll the dice to move their playing pieces around the board and eventually off the board. Whoever is able to remove all pieces from the board first wins.
