Both. Most commonly it is an individual game because it is one person against another but there can be teams. For example: four Chess boards and two teams: one red and one blue (it's an example). Each team has four players. They still play one against one but this time the score is summed up. Example: The players from thered team, all win their game, so the result is 4:0.
