I'm not sure about a equation, but if you were to count em' up, this is what you would get:
There are 64 1x1 squares on a standard checkerboard.
There are 204 total squares on an eight-by-eight checkerboard.
64 1x1 squares,
49 2x2 squares,
36 3x3 squares,
25 4x4 squares ,
16 5x5 squares,
9 6x6 squares ,
4 7x7 squares,
1 8x8 square,
Hope this helps!

[EDIT]
Also, if you just wanted to find the number of 1x1 squares you could do;
length x width equals 'surface area' or (a x b=c ) count the squares on one side, (horozontal) this equals (a) now count the squares on the other side (vertical) this equals (b) now multiply them for a calculation of 'surface area' You can use this method to find surface area in measurements or by the count of an item.
EDIT
notice how they're all square numbers
64=8x8
49=7x7
36=6x6
25=5x5
16=4x4
9=3x3
4=2x2
1=1x1

The square of the number of tiles on each row or column. Generally a chess board has 64 squares. This answer given above by one of our friends is true only incase of squares of same size. But as we consider all possible squares of different sizes, then it will be calcualted using the formula, 12+22+32+42+52+62+72+82

If you're talking about squares on the Chess board, then impossible. 9x9 is 81 and 10x10 is 100. If you're talking about the number of squares on 88 chess boards, then 88x64=5632.
If you are speaking only of the squares in which chess pieces move there are 64, 8 rows of 8 spaces each.If you are speaking of the total number of actual squares that could be found and counted within a chess board using the lines provided there are 204.
A queen in chess can move any number of squares vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. This means she has the potential to control up to 27 squares on an open board, depending on her position. However, the exact number of squares she can move to may be limited by the presence of other pieces on the board.
A chess board has 64 squares.
