This was the first time a computer system defeated a reigning world chess champion during an official chess tournament rules time-controlled match. Kasparov protested and accused IBM of cheating. IBM refused another rematch and dismantled Deep Blue.

'Deep Blue' was the first computer to beat a world chess champion. It defeated Garry Kasparov in 1997. There may well have been earlier computers that beat humans who did not play very well.
Garry has lost a rare amount of times, although most of the top players have beaten him at some point. Perhaps Garry's most famous loss came against the Deep Blue computer in 1996, the first time a computer had defeated a current world champion. Kasparov subsequently lost his World Championship title to Vladimir Kramnik in 2000, and retired from chess in 2005.
