He combines many of the qualities required of a good football manager. First of all, he is knowledgable about the game. He watches a lot of football and does a lot of research, especially when he was younger. Nowadays he uses his vast scouting network to do the work for him. Secondly, he is a good man-manager. He seems to know what attitude to use against different players. Thirdly, he stamps his authority on his team, allowing no prima donnas in the team, showing that there is no individual larger than the club.

Having said that, he has also been quite fortunate with, for example, the quality of young players coming through the ranks in one season at Manchester United, e.g. Beckham, Butt, Scholes, Gary & Phil Neville. However, his record at Aberdeen and Manchester United is not to be scoffed at.

At the time it would've been too good of an offer to turn down.
