As frustrating as it is, its all due to TV revenue. MLB is trying to maximize coverage of as many home openers being broadcast and available to as wide an audience as they can, as traditionally, just like stadiums are filled on Opening Day, TV ratings see a surge. That's why only a handful of games are played on the first real day of the season (not counting teams that play overseas), and then the remainder of the teams start on Day 2, with everyone back at it on Day 3. It is maddening though when your team starts on the first day after the long off-season, and then automatically has an off-day right away.

How old are the Cincinnati reds?

The Cincinnati Red Stockings were the first professional baseball club, formed in 1869. For a period in the 1950's they were known as the Cincinnati Redlegs, but then settled on Cincinnati Reds. To pay respect to heritage, for many years the first pitch of a season was always thrown at Cincinnati, always a home game for the Reds. Opening Day is still held every year in Cincinnati, and although the American League has started earlier on a few occasions the first pitch in the National League is still thrown on Opening Day in Cincinnati.

Did MLB always have playoffs?

No, Major League Baseball (MLB) did not always have playoffs in the format we recognize today. Initially, teams competed in a single league, and the team with the best record at the end of the season was declared the champion. The postseason as we know it began in 1903 with the first World Series, which was established to determine the champion between the National League and the newly formed American League. Over the years, the playoff structure has evolved, adding more teams and rounds to the postseason format.
