1) So you can tackle better - stronger men will tackle with more force and be able to "push" the oposing player off the ball easier.

2) when you are in possetion you will need to be able to "hold the ball up" meaning you can ride challenges from oposing players without losing your balance and keeping the ball - this is far easier with strength (particually upper body)

3) challenging for a 50/50 ball - you are much more likely to come out on top when challenging for a loose ball if you are stronger than the oposing player.
