According to former player Tommy Smith, Gerry Marsden presented manager Bill Shankly a pre-release copy of his cover of YNWA and Shanks loved it so much, that the travelling press wrote that it had been adopted as the club song.

During the 1960's, the DJ at Anfield would play the top-ten singles on the 'hit parade' in ascending order, with the number one single being played just before kickoff. The supporters on the Kop would often sing along to the songs with Marsden's YNWA becoming a firm favourite during 1963 to the extent that they continued to sing it after it had dropped out of the charts.
