The AFL is what it stands for - Australian Football League.
In 2012 it will be made up of 18 teams, playing rounds through winter, then towards September/October, there is a grand final.
It isn't Rugby or gaelic football, it's Australia's rightful own sport.
We don't use padding or helmets, meaning the players do have to be pretty tough.
The rules are more complicated than this, but they are easy to understand once you get used to it.
Here are the teams, just of interest.
-Adelaide Crows
-Brisbane Lions
-Carlton Blues
-Collingwood Magpies (Premiers 2010) (2011 Runners Up)
-Essendon Bombers
-Fremantle Dockers
-Geelong Cats (Premiers 2007, 2009, 2011) (2008 Runners Up)
-Gold Coast Suns (Debut year 2011)
-Greater Western Sydney Giants (To debut 2012)
-Hawthorn Hawks (Premiers 2008)
- Melbourne Demons
- North Melbourne Kangaroos
- Port Adelaide Power (2007 Runners Up)
-Richmond Tigers

It would be due to the more variety of skills required to play the game, and the fact that all players need these skills, not just some like i NRL. AFL players need to be incredibly fit, some running up to and more than 16km a game, need to be strong, but not too heavy, must be fast, physically and mentally, and must have great coordination skills. whereas in rugby, some players need to be fast, others need to be big, they're nowhere near as fit as AFL players, and have significantly less coordination skills, especially forwards. Hence AFL players are better.
Many people in the world love soccer and play it every day. However afl is just a national sport. Which means the only people that play afl are the ones living in australia. But all over the world everyone play soccer and enjoy it.
Some people think that football is the best sport but that is their opinion. Most people in England think that football is the best sport because it was invented in England>
