MacTavish's lack of experience, considerable shortcomings as a coach, and his mediocre 7-year record are all overlooked due to nepotism on the part of his friend, Oilers GM Kevin Lowe. The two made a pact in their days as roommates with the New York Rangers that when one got a GM job they would hire the other. The Oilers have always been an insiders-only, old-boys-from-the-glory-years organization, and they get away with it because their fans have always accepted it. Every year, the rationalizations and excuses flow like wine. The Oilers are a western version of Leafland, where the lemmings ignore the mediocrity and blindly follow because they are apparently incapable of demanding accountability.
