The players run for the majority of time especially those in the forward positions. When they do stop its normally for a set piece like a ruck, scrum or line out which of course requires energy to be used. When not running with the ball players are tackling, defending attempting to gain possession. stamina has to be maintained for a minimum of 80 minutes. There is also a massive drain of the individual when being tackled. These hits especially in critical defensive areas are draining.
