By doing so he increasing the time period in which the momentum of the ball is going to decrease due to this.according to Newton's second law of motion, magnitude of the force decreases
To reduce the relative velocity between ball and hand. Particularly important since gloves are not worn, as in Baseball.
Bacause of "IMPULSE" ie Force*time.
Here force=the weight of the ball /the force at which the ball comes to the cricketer's hand
Time=the time of contact of the cricket ball with the cricketr's hand.
If the time of contact increases the force applied by the ball on the cricketer's hand decreases. So he lowers his hand while catching a ball.

Beacause when a player knowingly has to chatch the ball it is best for him to be able to see when the ball comes therefore bein turned around, for example you cant just run straight then turn at a certain point because the person throghing isn't always going to able to waight as long so it is best to run backwards so you can see when to catch the ball:)

One possible reason is to reduce the impact on his hands due to the speed, force and hardness of the cricket ball.

by hands
Moving the hands backward while taking a catch allows the player to absorb the impact of the ball and reduce the chances of dropping it. This technique increases control and stability when attempting to catch a fast-moving or high ball. It also helps to cushion the force of the impact, making it easier to secure the catch.
Lowering the hands while catching a ball helps absorb the impact of the ball, reducing the chances of it bouncing out of the hands or injuring the player's fingers. It also allows for better control and stability during the catch.
