Ohio State had a #24 on their helmets because a scout-team player named Tyson Gentry broke his neck and was in a wheelchair after a hit, so the team put his number on their helmets to support him even though he did not die.

Ohio State players have the number "24" on their helmets in honor of Tyson "Ty" Gentry. Gentry, a walk-on punter/ scout team wide receiver, suffered a spinal cord injury during spring ball '06 and the team wears the number in support of him and his recovery.

The Ohio State Buckeyes wore decals on their helmets on Saturday, November 21st with the initials S.S. and a pink buckeye leaf in tribute to Stefanie Spielman. The wife of former OSU great Chris Spielman and mother of four died Thursday after an 11-year battle with Breast cancer.

Ohio is the buckeye state. the '"stars" are actually called buckeye leaves, and a player gets one for key plays or flawless play and everyone on the team gets one for a win, even if they suck
