The Mets name is short for Metropolitans ... New York is part of the Metropolitan area or better known as the Tri- State this region of the United States has the denies population and encompasses three States New York ,Northern New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

It's because the New York market is large enough to support two teams -- one in the National League and one in the American League. In fact, there were three teams in the area -- the Yankees, the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants -- until 1958. When the Dodgers and the Giants moved to the West Coast, the Mets were created in 1962 to fill the void in the National League.

Beleive it ornot people in New York are refered to as Metropolitans, and so the nickname for them is METS!!!! so they named a team after it

Well, because my dads a big fan, because when he was young, in the 80s , he saw the mets win the World Series and decided to like them.
