In the late 19th Century, Newton Heath was the football club from which Manchester United was formed. Fans wear the green and yellow scarves to show their disapproval for the Glazers' who own the club, who they think are ruining the club. In the mid 90's the united away kit was green and yellow, which was also a reference to Newton Heath.
