Basketball has a roster of only 15 players, while football has rosters of 53 athletes. Therefore, the pay has to be split among more players. Football also has only one "star" position that garners a lot of attention and generates large contracts: quarterback. In basketball, any of the five position players could be worthy of max contracts due to the nature of the game.
Each sport also has different collective bargaining agreements between the player unions and the respective owner's associations.

It depends on the specific scientist and football player in question. In general, top professional football players tend to earn more than scientists due to their high salaries, endorsement deals, and other income opportunities. However, there are some scientists, particularly those in lucrative fields such as biotechnology or pharmaceuticals, who may earn as much or more than some football players.
On average, about $1,000,000
