In 1983, the Steelers didn't have high hopes for Dan Marino, thinking they didn't need another quarterback and passed him up, they instead drafted defensive tackle Gabriel Rivera of Texas Tech. It turned out to be one of the worst mistakes in draft history.

In October 1983, Rivera was paralyzed in an auto accident. Marino was later inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame, playing his entire career for the Miami Dolphins.
