Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant benched Joe Namath for the 1963 game against Miami and the Sugar Bowl game against Ole Miss. Bama won both games without the Tide's all-SEC quarterback. Steve Sloan, Namath's backup, led Alabama to a 17-12 win over the Miami Hurricanes in the final regular season contest and a 12-7 victory over Ole Miss in the aforementioned Sugar Bowl.
