Why did Vince Lombardi leave the Green Bay Packers?

He stayed on as the team's General Manager for the 1968-1969 season. He took the job as Head Coach of the Washington Redskins in 1969. It wasn't until June of 1970 that he was diagnosed with cancer. He died on September 3, 1970.
